In growing companies, goals can often be aligned with employees’ skills and interests. However, it’s also important that you’re supporting team members to work on their weaknesses, through training programmes and professional development opportunities. However, this will often require managers to become coaches to their employees. McCall, he argues that in order to shape desired behavior, managers should set goals, measure them and hold their employees accountable. In growing companies, goals can often be aligned with employees’ skills and interests. However, it’s also important that you’re supporting team members to work on their weaknesses, through training programmes and professional development opportunities. Research shows  that professional development is usually divided into three parts: learning on the job, internal resources, and external education events. 1. 70% of professional development happens on the job. However, this will often require managers to become coaches to their employees. Managers need to encourage team members to complete tasks slightly outside of their comfort zone, as well as allowing them to fail. In our employee talk sheets, after defining goals and measurements (e.g. being clearer about key points in meetings, to provide a better understanding to all participants), we would discuss concrete steps to reach that goal (for example, opportunities to practise public speaking). 2. For the next 20% of professional development, we have internal resources at hand. Not only do we hire bright minds to work independently on projects, but we also look to hire people based on their ability to help and teach one another. As a result, we’ve developed a table of mentors and mentees based on coaching abilities and discussions during the employee talks. Mentors can be simply approached by mentees when they encounter a problem on the job, or teams can schedule bigger tutorials for a couple of interested people. This is how we spread knowledge about programming languages, project management, inclusive leadership and business English, amongst other skills and attributes. 3. The final 10% of employee development happens at formal educational events, such as the Reactive Conf or the Railsconf two conferences that a number of our developers will be attending, as well as other opportunities for external training. In short: Besides the evaluation of technical and interpersonal skills, weve developed a plan together with team members that enables our employees to reach their goals within a year, including via in-house and external support. 4. Pakistan is a country fraught with taboos, unspoken yet established boundaries, and limits to speech and thought that continue to bind people despite the absence of a legal or formal framework to define the same. Religion, sex, rape, divorce à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" never does the society discuss such issues openly, nor do any other topics possess similar capabilities to silence a conversation. Yet, at the same time, people witness considerable debate on whether or not sex education should be introduced as part of curricula at educational institutes in Pakistan; debate that has, more often than not, been stifled using arguments that appeal more to societal norms than logic. Such reactions tend to ignore the various problems Pakistan faces today, many of which can be eradicated if, starting from an early age, appropriate education is provided to everybody. While opposition to any plans to introduce sex education at educational institutes in Pakistan is widespread, its ability to ward off pr obable medical consequences of unsafe intercourse, prospective role in solving some of our major social problems, and, in the religious context of Pakistan, ability to accurately transfer sacred teachings and knowledge to the young generation make the implementation of a proper, regulated sex education program imperative for Pakistan. Perhaps the most pressing concern, which propagates the importance of sex education not only in Pakistan but throughout the world, relates to the medical consequences of unsafe sexual intercourse. Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), infections (STIs), and teenage pregnancy are issues that have caused panic in recent years. In particular, teenage pregnancies and the outbreak of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) across the world have alarmed medics and led to an increased emphasis on imparting sex education to children from an early age; without this education, they would not be in a position to know how to prevent unwanted pregnancies and protect themselves from such problems. Pakistan is no exception when it comes to the spread of AIDS and other diseases; in spite of the deeply Islamic nature of society, "high-risk behavior is prevalent" (Khwaja, Gibney, Ahmed, and Vermund 847), which implies that ignoring the rise in reported cases would only worsen the impact such disease s would have. Public reactions against any form of awareness campaigns have, however, obscured Pakistanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fight against these perils. In order for this battle to be more effective, educationalists and the government of Pakistan must implement sex education programs at institutes across the country. The inherent taboos of the Pakistani society have given rise to many social problems, which only strengthen the case for sex education to be imparted to students at institutions. One of the biggest stigmas attached to women in Pakistan today is the false notion of infertility, followed closely by the baseless blame that falls on women should a marriage fail to produce male offspring. Women are not the only ones to suffer at the hands of society; children are also abused, many times sexually, by adults directly responsible for their wellbeing. According to Sahil, an organization that works against child sexual abuse in Pakistan, children who are abused sexually know the offenders in most cases, and the offenders have a position of trust and authority over them ("Child Sexual Abuseà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ). Thus a lack of awareness about sexual issues plays a vital role in exacerbating the problems faced by women and children in the Pakistani society. Should people be given the required sex edu cation, they would know that females are not the only ones who may suffer from infertility, and also that the gender of the offspring is determined not by the female egg cell, but by the chromosomes donated by the male sperm. Children, another vulnerable section of the society, would be in a position to identify sexually abusive behavior of adults and to report it to someone responsible. They would also be able to defend themselves against such acts of transgression by the very people they trust, and in the event of abuse having taken place, the disgrace attached to such an event would disappear. Adequate sexual education right from the start would, thus, play a huge role in eliminating discrimination and offenses against the two most vulnerable sections of society. Opposition to the idea of sexual education at institutes is common and the reasons cited diverse; one of the foremost arguments against such a proposition is the pitiable state of the education system of Pakistan. The poor, it is argued, are most vulnerable to problems due to unsafe sexual activity and they are usually not enrolled at institutes that would provide knowledge about these issues. The abominable state of education in Pakistan is also cited as an argument, and it is proposed, instead, that enrollment and retention rates be improved, a standard of education be reached, and then the issue of sexual education be brought up. While the education system of Pakistan certainly does need massive improvements, the proponents of this argument against sex education at existing institutes succeed only in establishing vague links between the general literacy rate and the spread of problems owing to sexual activity among the population. A simple example of the African continent would su ffice; while African nations suffer the most at the hands of AIDS and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases, their literacy rates are significantly higher than that of Pakistan and many other nations with notably lower prevalence of these diseases. Subsequently, it can be deduced that literacy or higher levels of education have little or no bearing on the vulnerability of individual behaviors in a society; instead, it is only the provision of education on sexual activity, safety, and other such issues that determines how safe people are in general. The argument used most often, and perhaps the largest hindrance to the implementation of sex education programs in Pakistan is the conservative nature of the Pakistani society. People believe that sex education is against Islam, the religion they and the countryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s constitution follow, and reactions against anything deemed contrary to Islamic teachings and principles is usually quick and severe. By arguing that teachings about sex would entice youngsters into activities prohibited by religion, leading them to engage in pre-marital sex or other such deeds considered offensive by the Pakistani culture, the whole concept of sex education has been assumed to be in conflict with Islamic principles. Prominent psychologist Dr. Sol Gordon, however, disagrees with the notion of sex education leading to increased desire for sexual activity. In July 2011, Spotify launched in the United States. This program not only had the ability to stream music for its listeners, but it was also free. As long as the artists were featured on this program, users could listen to any of their songs at any time. At first, this was only restricted to desktop computer usage, but since then Spotify has launched its app available for mobile devices, further stretching this power of free and instant media at any time. Although this may sound great to users like you and me, the people who ultimately suffer are the artists that put there music out there on Spotify. By allowing us to listen to their music for free, the profits from CD’s and iTunes digital music sales have begun to decrease. This means that artists who have their media on Spotify overall do not make the profit that they normally should. Great Expectations’ main character, Phillip Pirrip- generally known as Pip- had a rough upbringing as a child. For my final project, I have chosen the plays Fences by August Wilson and Zoot Suit by Luis Valdez to compare and contrast, when it comes to their themes of multiculturalism, interculturalism, and transculturalism. Multiculturalism is the process of immigration and globalization of societies in the world. The world is made up of a mix of many nationalities, cultures, groups, orientations, or ideologies. Multiculturalism involves the acknowledgment of the different groups of ethnic people, cultures, and regions as opposed to the accepting an ideology of a single cultural identity or nation. Interculturalism involves the aspects of anthropology, cultural learning, psychology, and communication. It is these factors that cause the conflict and contrast between different generations, ethnic groups from different regions, and different character traits. The evolution of these struggles provides the root of the formation of the humankind in the society. Finally, the concept of transculturalism is the blending of all human culture styles. It involves combining elements of more than one culture. Transculturalism creates history, diversity, and the support to one another in the formulation of various vibrant experiences. The roars of modified import cars stimulate my senses as I walk towards the Dallas Convention Center, where the 2001 Hot Imports Night car show is taking place. All around me, groups of anxious car enthusiasts rush towards the convention center. Hundreds of people were already in line, impatiently waiting to buy a ticket for the show. As I approached the entrance, I was overwhelmed by the onslaught of sounds coming from within. I knew walking in that this will be a day I wouldn t soon forget. As I stood in that cavernous exhibitions hall, my eyes feasted on rows of modified Hondas, Acuras, Mazdas, and other import cars. The car that caught my attention was a lime green 1995 Honda Civic Hatchback, shining radiantly below four strobe lights. This car had an Acura Integra GSR engine in it, a Greddy exhaust system, headers, a turbocharger, intercooler, white rims, a dragon decal on the hood, and many other modifications. Behind me I overheard a guy saying dats tight, but there are better cars and I knew he was right. There were endless rows of cars, and each row had its own representation of perfection. The cars were not the only part of the show that caught my attention. Standing by each sponsored car was a girl in her mid twenties wearing everything but clothes. One girl had on a golden studded bikini, which complemented her Venus-like body and her long flowing blond hair. Her innocent smile and seductive pose made it hard for me to take my eyes off of her. There were also models sitting behind desks signing posters for a modest fee. These were the models that graced the cover of car magazines as well as Playboy. Standing in front of these models would be lines of fans who wanted an autograph and picture. I tried to take a picture of every car model that I saw, unfortunately I ran out of film. When I reached the end of the hall I was surprised to see a disc jockey spinning break beats on a turntable and a mob of people raving and dancing on a dance floor as if they were in a nightclub. The music that came from the four giant sized speakers at this area was even louder than the music that played throughout the hall. The strobe lights had a dizzying affect, and my mind blurred as I walked through the crowd of people dancing. In one corner of the dance floor, I managed to push through the crowd of mesmerized people to get a glimpse of a short Asian guy, drenched with sweat, wearing flared jeans and a pink polo knit shirt wowing the crowd with his flawless break dancing abilities. As I had predicted, the night was anything but forgettable. I now anxiously await next year s event, which will take place next May. In the meantime, I ll just relive that night in my mind and learn some dance moves so that I can participate on the dance floor instead of standing around recording everyone else with a video camera. Many famous leaders of our time have let the power they held corrupt them to the point of their own assassination by their own people. Today people use their power in different ways. They think since they have the power that they can do as they please and no one will say a word because they are the boss. There are corporate CEO's that misuse company property such as cars and planes. There are others that make their workers do things that they would not normally do in any other situation. Some have suggested that President Clinton's engaged in a sexual dalliance with his intern Monica Lewinsky simply because of power. There are two types of power according to Ronald E Riggio Ph.D. One is Socialized power and this power is the power used to benefit others. The other form of power is called personalized power, and it is used for personal gain instead of promoting their company and or people. (Riggio, 2009) Leaders can also become "drunk" by the power which causes them to engage in wrong behavior, simply because they can. They continue this behavior because they have and can get away with it. A sense of power can cause a leader to engage in exception making believing that the rules that govern what is right and what is wrong does not apply to the powerful leader like themselves. On the positive side, power makes leaders more assertive and confident and certain of their decisions. This enables them to move forward on a chosen courses of action. Leaders must use power to get the job done. There is a lot of good that come from leaders with power. They donate money to the needy, volunteer, and help people to gain success just like they have. Legitimately unless the leaders with power are caught and punished for what they are doing or are engaging in illegal activity they are only going to be perceived as doing wrong.
